Add cost-effective solutions to your RV camper to save on cooling and heating.

Staying cooler during hot summer weather in the southern states can be challenging. Using your air conditioner can significantly increase your electric bill. That said, some tips and tricks can help keep those expenses down, and one or two are even helpful in winter months.

Quick and Easy Solutions

One of the fastest and most user-friendly ways to reduce excessive heat and increase shade for your RV is a zip-on awning shade. This sunshade not only effectively blocks the sun and heat but is also incredibly easy to install, providing shade and privacy for your outdoor seating area.

Another effective way to keep your RV cool is by using heat-reflective window shades. If you're not a fan of the standard aluminum color for your interior, you can cover one side with a fabric that matches your RV décor, creating an attractive and personalized window shade.

Year-Round Energy Saving Solutions

Whether you're a frequent traveler or a permanent resident at a campground, skirting is a cost-effective solution to decrease energy costs. For shorter stays, a canvas or vinyl skirting option is obviously better, as it's easy to snap on and off. For long-term stays, consider a vinyl or wood canopy to transform your RV into a stationary residence, saving you money on energy costs and providing an affordable housing option.

The advantages of skirting in both summer and winter are that it acts as an insulating barrier underneath your RV, helping to reduce energy consumption.

Summer:

  • Regulates temperature – The barrier it creates helps prevent hot air from circulating underneath your camper, which in turn cools the interior of your RV and reduces the workload on your AC.

  • Reduces Energy Costs—By keeping your RV cooler, your AC will run more efficiently, lowering your electricity bill.

  • Protection from Wind – Acting as a windbreak, skirting prevents wind from channeling underneath and causing potential damage or harm to your camper.

Winter:

  • Freezing Protection—If you live in an area with frozen pipes, skirting will help trap heat and prevent cold air from circulating underneath your RV.

  • Insulation – Since the insulation effect of skirting effectively blocks cold air, you'll have a warmer interior and reduced heating costs.

  • Cost-effective Heating – By preventing heat loss from underneath, your heating system will run efficiently and cost-effectively.

  • Debris and Pest Protection—Skirting will help keep debris and pests from entering your camper's underbelly, which, in the long run, may extend the life of your RV.

Other Solutions to Consider

Other ideas include metal or wood canopies over your camper and seating area. This is beneficial if you're here for numerous retirement years or if you plan to sell your setup to other retirees down the road. The canopy and skirting will make your RV so energy-efficient that you'll have more money to spend on travel or other activities.

Numerous other tips and tricks can be implemented to enhance your RVing experience. Stay tuned, as we will publish a series of tips, tricks, and hacks to help you go "Ah, ha!" I forgot, or if you're new to RV camping, it will help you in so many other ways.
